Campendium

Another crowd-sourced platform offering free camping insights. Using Campendium is great because it’s very detailed and most places are easily found with this app. It’s one of our favorites.

BLM Website

For precise mapping, the Bureau of Land Management website offers downloadable maps, ensuring you’re on legal boondocking grounds. Brush up on map-reading skills for a seamless experience.

Maps.me

While not dedicated to boondocking, this app provides downloadable maps for global navigation, even offline. A handy backup when conventional GPS falters. Maps.me is a great one to have on your phone.

Boondocking in a Rental RV: A Balancing Act

If you don’t own your own RV and need to rent one, there are a few things to keep in mind. Renting an RV for boondocking requires a self-contained rig with ample resources for off-grid living. While manufactured rental RVs like Cruise America rigs are equipped for short off-grid stays, consider peer-to-peer rentals from sites like RVezy or Outdoorsy for extended boondocking adventures. I use wash tubs and really am very thoughtful on my water use. Things also like, if it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down. Might not sound the most glamourous, but every bit of water conservation helps.

Bringing drinking and cooking water in jugs instead of using on board water for that.

Survey your chosen site in advance to avoid challenges like narrow roads or difficult terrain. A crucial step, especially when navigating larger RVs.

This is very important for many reason. If you are not familiar with driving a big rig, and get into a tight spot you might not know how to get out. And, sometimes being to out of sight isn’t always safe.

Be Respectful

Follow all rules of your chosen boondocking site, from stay limits to permit requirements. Preserve the land by leaving no trace, and respect fellow campers’ space and tranquility. Clean up your garbage, and dog waste and take it with you when you go.

Be Prepared

Anticipate potential challenges by securing your RV, belongings, and having an emergency plan in place. Weather conditions can change, so prepare for the unexpected.
