The History of Eastern State Penitentiary

The discussion about the need for innovation in the US penitentiary system began in 1782 when Philadelphia was the political capital of the United States.

At the time, the creation of Eastern State Penitentiary revolutionized US architecture – each cell had heating, sewerage, and water when not even the White House had these characteristics.

It was also the first prison in the world to have solitary confinement – prisoners there often developed mental illnesses because they used to eat, sleep and even exercise in isolation.

Eastern State was finally decommissioned in 1971, after 142 years of function.

Visiting The Eastern State Penitentiary

The disabled prison is open for visitation every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at 2027 Fairmount Ave. For $12, you get an audio guide and take the tour for as long as you feel like it.

One fun thing about the Eastern Penitentiary audio tour is that you can choose to hear extra information about the prison (such as ghost stories, gangs, and prisoner reports).

My experience

I thought the visit to Eastern State Penitentiary is a very unique and interesting thing to do if you have some spare time in Philadelphia, especially if you are interested in American history.

It is, though, a place where a lot of suffering took place, so it is important to be respectful.

Walking around, you can feel that the walls are loaded with the energy of everything that had happened there when the prison was still in function.

It took me about two hours to finish my audio tour, and I learned so much from it.
