The Wizard of Oz – Las Vegas Sphere
The Wizard of Oz, one of the most beloved films in cinema history, was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and released in 1939. Directed primarily by Victor Fleming and based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Filming took place mainly on sound stages at MGM Studios in Culver City, California between 1938 and 1939. Using elaborate sets, groundbreaking Technicolor cinematography, and innovative special effects for the time.
Although the movie is now considered a classic, it initially earned about $3 million at the box office against a high production cost of roughly $2.8 million. Meaning its profits were modest during its first theatrical run. Over time, however, the film gained enormous popularity through theatrical re-releases in 1949, 1955. Later years, as well as annual television broadcasts beginning in the 1950s, which helped cement its place in American culture.
Today, the film—starring Judy Garland as Dorothy—is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made, famous for its music, memorable characters, and the iconic song “Over the Rainbow.” 🌈🎬

To the Sphere with the Wizard
As if The Wizard of Oz wasn’t a big enough hit the way it was, someone had the idea to really capitalize on it and oh boy did they do a bang up job!!
If you’re a fan of classic movies, this is a pretty cool twist on a legendary film. The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is a 2025 immersive 4D experience based on the original The Wizard of Oz. This new version was created specifically for the massive Sphere in Las Vegas, where it plays on the venue’s incredible 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen in stunning 16K resolution.
The experience premiered on August 28, 2025, and brings the beloved 1939 musical fantasy—originally directed by Victor Fleming—into a whole new era with immersive visuals and 4D effects designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped right into Oz.
The show runs about 1 hour and 15 minutes and reportedly had a production budget of around $100 million, which gives you an idea of just how massive this reimagined version of the classic really is. 🌪️✨
Why I Love The Wizard of Oz
Growing up I was a fan of The Wizard of Oz probably before I was born, because my Mom was a big fan. Even though the movie came out way before my Mom was born, it was her favorite. She loved it so much that when my sister and I moved out of the house she turned my sisters old bedroom into the Wizard of Oz room. She collected all sorts of memorabilia’s from the classic movie.
So of course her love of the movie passed onto me and I love to watch it every year like we did when we were growing up. When my husband and I were in Las Vegas in February 2025 and saw that the movie was coming to the Sphere I said that I really wanted to see it. However, I figured that chance would never come.
We live in Minnesota and our travels are saved for Feb-April when we RV to warmer climates. However, we decided last minute to take a quick trip to Las Vegas. We met up with family there so that made things even more special.
A Must See Show
Let me just say, without giving away to much about the show. It really was no miracle, what happened was just this. The wind began to switch, the house to pitch, and suddenly the hinges started to unhitch. (sound familiar?)
Seeing the movie at the Sphere makes you feel like you are IN the movie. When the tornado hits, the wind starts blowing and leaves are floating around in the air. The trees throw apples, apples fall from the ceiling. (I caught 2). There are flying monkeys, butterflies, and snow falling during the “Poppies” scene. Literally one of the coolest experiences you will ever have seeing a movie.
Even with all that making this movie amazing there is one thing that tops all that. Obviously that is the fact it’s on a HUGE screen.

Now I know I could go on and on about The Wizard of Oz show. I don’t want to give too much away. You’ve probably seen it on TV many times so know what to expect for the most part. However, the big screen, effects and all the fun stuff at the Sphere should be a surprise.
