10 Essential Tips for RVers
1. Pack Wisely
When setting off on your RV journey, resist the temptation to pack everything but the kitchen sink. Opt for essentials that will enhance your camping experience without cluttering your space. Prioritize items such as camping gear, adequate fuel, and provisions for your trip.
Of course all this can also depend on the destination, the length of your trip and the size of your rig. If you have a small rig, you might only fit the main essentials. A bigger rig will have more storage and space for extra goodies.
There are some basic must have RV essentials everyone should consider for every trip. Flashlights, coolers, blankets, chargers, chairs, maps, food, etc.
2. Ensure RV Readiness
Before embarking on your adventure, conduct a thorough inspection of your RV to ensure it’s roadworthy. Whether you’re renting or borrowing, prioritize safety by checking for any mechanical issues and verifying past servicing records. If renting and the RV doesn’t meet your standards, don’t hesitate to request a replacement. However, if the RV is yours, doing routine inspections and keeping things running properly is very important.
It also doesn’t hurt to be handy. Especially when you are on the road and something unexpected happens, like your diesel losing power. There isn’t always a shop close by to pull into, so knowing a few things about RV’s and or being able to Google or YouTube things helps.
3. Choose the Perfect Campsite or RV Park
The choice of campsite or RV park can significantly impact your overall experience. Research potential campgrounds and RV parks beforehand to ensure they cater to RV camping and offer amenities that align with your preferences. Booking in advance eliminates last-minute surprises and guarantees a hassle-free stay.
Generally a campground is less crowded, offer more spacious spots with a more woodsy/outdoorsy feel. However, many don’t have hook up or only offer partial hook ups. So, if you need full hookups an RV park will be a better option.

4. Emergency Preparedness
Safety should always be a top priority while RV camping. Have a list of emergency contacts readily available and inform a trusted individual of your whereabouts. This proactive approach ensures quick access to assistance should the need arise, providing peace of mind throughout your journey.
Keep in mind that you might not always have cell service depending on where you are RVing to. You can always use a cell phone to call 911 no matter where you are.
5. Start Close to Home
For novice RVers, or those renting an RV for the first time, starting your journey close to home offers several advantages. Familiar surroundings provide a safety net, allowing you to acclimate to RV life while remaining within reach of familiar resources. This proximity facilitates an easier transition and enhances overall comfort.

6. Equip Yourself with Tools and Spare Parts
While breakdowns are never ideal, they can happen unexpectedly. Arm yourself with essential tools and spare parts to handle common roadside issues independently. Items such as spare tires, tire gauges, jumper cables, and wrenches can be invaluable in resolving minor setbacks efficiently.
As I said earlier, sometimes things like a diesel losing power happen and it’s nice if you know how to fix it, or can figure out a way around it.
7. Pre-Pack Essentials
Avoid last-minute packing frenzy by preparing in advance. Ensure all necessary items are stowed away in your RV well before departure day. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of forgetting crucial supplies and streamlines your pre-trip preparations.
This of course depends on when you leave for your RV travels as well. We are mostly winter RVers and so I can’t pack the RV fully until the day before we leave. Living in Minnesota means it’s usually very cold in February and that is when we leave. So, anything that might freeze is in boxes in my entryway just ready to be loaded the morning of or the night before we leave.
8. Utilize a Checklist
To streamline your pre-departure routine, create a comprehensive checklist encompassing all essential tasks and items. Refer to this list as you prepare for your journey, systematically checking off each item to ensure nothing is overlooked. This organizational tool serves as a valuable resource for both novice and experienced RVers alike.
I keep a notepad on my desk for a whole month before we leave. I make my initial list and then add to it as I think of things.
9. Plan Your Route
Mapping out your route ahead of time enables smoother navigation and minimizes unexpected detours. Consider factors such as road conditions, traffic patterns, and security concerns when plotting your course. A well-planned route enhances efficiency and allows for a more enjoyable travel experience.
Decide if you want to be an interstate traveler or take the scenic routes. They both have their advantages. We like the scenic route, until it’s time to pull over for the night and then we hop back on a major highway so we can utilize truck stops or wayside rests.
10. Arrive Early at Your Destination
Arriving at your destination with ample daylight ensures a stress-free setup process. Attempting to establish camp in the dark can be challenging and potentially hazardous. Aim to reach your destination early to maximize daylight hours and facilitate a smooth arrival.
Embrace the Adventure
Regardless of whether you’re a first-time RVer or a seasoned enthusiast, embarking on an RV journey promises excitement, adventure, and endless possibilities. Embrace the freedom of the open road, immerse yourself in nature’s splendor, and relish the camaraderie of fellow travelers.
