Easy RV Window Makeover

07/05/2022 · In: RV Life

Redoing the inside of an RV can be a bit scary! Looking for an Easy RV Window Makeover then check out how I updated my new RV to tailor it to my decor liking.

Buying your new house on wheels can be a very exciting thing and there are many layouts and styles to choose from. But, the one downfall is that most have decor that might not be exactly to your taste.

Inside an RV

Just like fashion and home decor choices, the colors and patterns in RV’s change with the times. Back in the 70’s you saw more orange and browns, then in the 80’s it was just many colors of browns. Now days, it’s a lot of blues and I’ve even seen light pink and purple in RV’s. Not sure who comes up with the colors or patterns, but they really need to fire those people and hire me!

One can walk into an RV that has a great layout, but be taken back and turned off by the colors or patterns. That is honestly enough to make someone walk into an RV and walk right back out. Many people don’t realize you can change the look and feel very easily, and without breaking the bank.

Stock RV Window Coverings

To not make anyone think they have bad taste, I won’t say my window coverings were horrible, they just weren’t to my liking. I know many people buy new RV’s and leave everything as is, but I just couldn’t do that.

Blue is not my favorite color and some of the shades were not working correctly and a bit stained, and those big box valances that cover the windows just take up to much space. As you see here in the picture, this is the window valance over the couch. It matches the couch and for me that was just to much.

These valances were on every window throughout the whole RV and a much needed RV window makeover was in order.

How to Remove RV Valances

Every RV is different so the first thing for an RV window makeover you need to do is study and evaluate your window coverings. Feel them, take a flashlight and look under them, and assess where all the screws or brackets are.

Once you find the screws and brackets, just tackle them like a pro. I just unscrewed everything and let them fall. That was fun, and even though there were a lot of screws and I had to take some breaks, when they were all down it felt great!

Because I wasn’t trying to salvage any of the valance or shade, I wasn’t to picky on how I removed them. It really is easier than one might think to remove these things. See how it looks when they are all gone.

New RV Window Coverings

Deciding on what kind of RV window covers you want is important because they are not cheap and once you put them up, you will want them there forever. Because I wanted an all in one, I went with blackout curtains.

Finding rods was a little trickier as I needed ones that were a wrap around so the curtains would wrap all the way from wall to wall. That way no light is let in on the sides. The rods also couldn’t stick away from the wall very far.

After searching for the perfect rods I found these Decopolitan Industrial Wrap Around Telescoping Curtain Rods and they were perfect! They secured to the wall nicely, and the curtains fit them perfectly!

Everyone is different in what or how they want their home on wheels to look. I am not a fan of blue but there really wasn’t much I can do right now with the couch. Instead I went with a light grey blackout curtain throughout the whole rig, except the bedroom.

The furniture is a blueish grey and the grey window treatments with the black rods look very sleek. I am not a fancy person and wanted a more warm and homey feel and look.

The reason I went with blackout curtains is because shades are not always dark enough. RV parks, wayside rests and truck stops can be well lit. We do like it very dark to sleep. And, they also can help keep the RV cool if we are in warm places.

Bedroom Window Makeover

The bedroom was the first room I tackled and I am going to be redoing it again next summer. I didn’t get the wrap around rods like I used up front. The curtains I got were not the same as in the main part of the rig either. But they will do for now.

When looking at the pictures you can see what I mean about the curtain rods. The curtains are nice Elegant Home Blackout Curtains.

Diving In to an RV Window Makeover

Deciding to update the look of your RV can be fun and basically the sky is the limit. The valance above my kitchen sink and the one in the bathroom are still in place. Future project for when we come home in the spring.

At the front of the rig, where the huge windshield is, there is a wrap around curtain. This curtain is pulled closed when we park. That curtain that was there was falling apart. I removed that one as well and constructed a way to put a new curtain there. Watch for my post about that, coming soon.

We will be testing out the new curtains and the RV life soon. Hoping to pull out of our driveaway January 20, 2021. The adventure awaits!
