Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick
In the world of rock and roll, few musicians can claim a legacy and influence as far-reaching as that of Rick Nielsen. Nielsen is the founder and lead guitarist of Cheap Trick, the legendary American rock band that has been making music of the highest order for over five decades. With his innovative approach to guitar playing, catchy riffs, and irreverent persona, Nielsen has established himself as one of the most beloved and respected figures in the history of rock music. In this blog post, we will delve into the genius of Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick and explore his contributions to the art of guitar playing and songwriting.
Born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1948, Rick Nielsen took an interest in music at a very young age and never looked back. Nielsen’s early influences included the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Kinks, but he soon developed his own unique style that blended elements of hard rock, punk, and power pop. A self-taught guitarist, Nielsen’s playing is characterized by its virtuosity, speed, and ability to seamlessly transition between rhythm and lead guitar. He is also renowned for his use of unusual and eccentric guitars, including the five-necked Hamer guitar that he helped design and which has become his signature instrument.
Songwriter
In addition to his prowess as a guitarist, Nielsen is also an exceptional songwriter. His compositions for Cheap Trick are characterized by their infectious hooks, clever lyrics, and unapologetic attitude. Songs like “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police,” and “Surrender” are now considered classics of the rock canon, and have been covered by numerous other artists. Nielsen’s songwriting reflects his love of pop music, but also his willingness to take creative risks and experiment with different styles and sounds.
Rick’s Stage Presence
Another aspect of Nielsen’s genius is his stage presence. With his wild, colorful outfits, trademark baseball cap, and goofy sense of humor, Nielsen has become a beloved figure in the world of rock and roll. He is known for his energetic and unpredictable performances, often jumping, spinning, and clowning around on stage. Nielsen’s charisma and charm have won over fans all over the world, and he remains a vital and active presence in the music scene to this day.

Tom Petersson – 12 String Bass
While Cheap Trick as a whole is well-known, one member that often doesn’t receive as much attention is Tom Petersson. Let’s take a deep dive into who Tom Peterrson really is and his contributions to the legendary band.
Born on June 9, 1950, in Rockford, Illinois. He first started playing music as a teenager and eventually joined local band Fuse in the late 60s. It was during this time that he met future Cheap Trick bandmates Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos. Fuse disbanded in 1973, but Tom, Rick, and Bun E. continued to play together, eventually adding Robin Zander as a lead vocalist in 1974 to form Cheap Trick.
At the start of Cheap Trick’s success, Tom Petersson was often overshadowed by Rick Nielsen’s flamboyant personality and flashy guitar playing. But despite being the more reserved member of the band, Tom provided crucial support as a bassist and backing vocalist. His harmonies were an essential part of their signature sound, particularly on tracks like “The Flame” and “Don’t Be Cruel”.
12-String Bass
Petersson’s quest for innovation led him to experiment with different sounds and techniques. This ultimately led to the creation of his 12-string bass. The concept of a 12-string bass was unprecedented in the music world. And it presented several technical challenges because of its size and weight. However, Petersson was determined to make it happen and spent several years developing the instrument.
After numerous prototypes and extensive collaboration with Hamer Guitars, Petersson finally created the 12-string bass that we know today. The bass features four triple sets of strings, which give it a unique sound that is both rich and harmonious. The instrument has been used in most of Cheap Trick’s recordings since the late 1980s. It has become an iconic symbol of the band’s sound.
Personal Life
Petersson and his wife Alison have two children, son Liam and daughter Lilah. In 2014, Tom and Alison founded Rock Your Speech. This was to promote awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder. And to use music to help children overcome speech difficulties associated with autism. (Wiki)
Daxx Nielsen of Cheap Trick
While the name Daxx Nielsen may not be one you’re familiar with. He has been an integral part of the rock band Cheap Trick for more than 10 years. Born in Rockford, Illinois, Daxx wasn’t even born yet when his father, Rick Nielsen, formed Cheap Trick in the 1970s. Now Daxx is the band’s drummer, and he’s worked with them on some of their most iconic albums and tours. But Daxx’s career and personal life extends far beyond his work with Cheap Trick.
Daxx’s career with Cheap Trick began in 2010 when the band’s original drummer, Bun E. Carlos, had health issues. Daxx filled in for Carlos and later became the full time drummer for Cheap Trick. He’s worked with them on albums such as “Bang, Zoom, Crazy…Hello” and “In Another World”. Daxx has also performed with the band on tours around the world, including the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. Fans rave about Daxx’s performance, saying that he’s brought a new energy to Cheap Trick’s music. It’s awesome that the set lists get changed up each gig and the sets last a bit longer.
Personal Life
Happily married to his wife Heather and together they have 2 adorable son’s, Siggy X and Iver X.

Bun E. Carlos
Cheap Trick has been one of the most outstanding rock bands of all time and Bun E Carlos is an instrumental part of that success. He is an amazing drummer, the backbone of the band’s solid rhythm section, and has contributed significantly to shaping their sound. However, there is more to Bun E Carlos than the talented drummer.
Bun E Carlos was born Brad M. Carlson on June 12, 1950, in Rockford, Illinois. He started playing the drums at a young age and never stopped. Carlos, along with his High School friend Rick Nielson, started playing music together and later formed Cheap Trick in 1973. Bun E Carlos is a founding member of the band and had a significant impact on their music, performance, and success.
Passing the Torch
Although Cheap Trick was known for high energy live performances, Bun E Carlos stepped back from touring with the band after 2010, and Rick’s son Daxx Nielson took over drumming duties. Despite this, Carlos is still connected to the band in many ways. He is a voting member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the band was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.
Currently, Bun E Carlos is involved in many projects. He has a new band called The Monday Night Band, which is hosted by Jazz lounge. He has also released a solo album titled Greetings from Bunezuela!. The album features cover versions of classic rock tunes.
Continuing On
Bun E Carlos has spent decades as a drummer and has played an integral role in forming and contributing to Cheap Trick’s success. Although he no longer tours with the band, he has remained present in music and in fans’ hearts. His impressive musical resume speaks of his talents and his new work demonstrates that he still has plenty to offer. Fans of Carlos should continue to anticipate excellent work from this legendary artist.
All in the Family
The members of Cheap Trick are all about music and family. The Nielsen Trust is a family band suggested by Rick’s wife Karen. The band consists of Rick and 2 of his son’s, Miles and Daxx as well as Mile’s wife Kelly. While they don’t play often, if they do and are close to you don’t miss the chance to see them.
Robin and his kids have done a few shows in Wisconsin Dells. Sadly they probably won’t happen again, the ones that did were amazing! Robin and his son Taylor would play all the Cheap Trick hits. Adding in deep tracks as well as other songs they like. The weekend also included Robin’s son Ian and daughter Holland with their bands. The Robin and Family shows were so unique. An intimate setting, and very personable.

Oh No!! I think many times casinos either do last minute shows, or they just don’t promote a lot because the casino goers/workers buy all the tickets no problem.
